Doug Trafford was born on April 3rd, 1927 in Simcoe, Norfolk County, Ontario. His love for the areas nautical history began at an early age with family trips to what many historians and authors have labeled the Isle of Romance -- Long Point. With its many inland channels and islands, foggy marshes, and shipwreck legends, ones youthful imagination could go on endless journeys. His genealogical history also ties him to the Royal Navy with his great-great grandfather serving with Lord Nelson.

Working in the Trades and helping his wife Grace, of 60 plus years, in the antiques business, he didn’t begin painting until 2006. His subject matter includes lake freighters, rum-runners, pleasure craft, Muskoka boats, steamers, ocean liners and Port Dover’s famous turtle deck fish-tugs. He also enjoys the historical aspects of the boats he paints and researches their story to ensure accurate detail with a particular flare. Doug is well known for his rum-runners and his personal knowledge on the subject adds to the importance of these images. The Long Point areas was famous for many outlaw events and bootleg characters during the 1930s, most of which have been documented through these Folk Art paintings. One of the most impressive of all the prohibition legends includes the sinking of the City of Dresden in the Inner Bay of Long Point with Doug having painted several variations.

One of his City of Dresden examples, along with other Lake Erie boats, has been donated to charity fund-raisers in support of the community. His work has been on display at many events including the prestigious Cabin Fever show in Kingston Ontario. His work can also be seen in the permanent collection of local museums and has a strong following with private collectors throughout Canada and the United States.
