File No. A2038

2000 lb 8’ High x 5’
Shaft Antique Anchor
Owner says that it is probably an 19th century, 1850 anchor
The anchor was found in 20 ft of water in lee of Mona Island. It was wedged under some rock and grown into
the coral. There is welding repair
evident: the addition of triangular flukes, modifying the traditional
fluke-less “fishermans style” grappling points. This welding means it was
dropped no earlier than 1925, and probably in the 30’s or 40’s, as that was
when welding began to happen on small vessels.
If the welded part were removed it would be more “authentic” however
this welded part adds to the story, giving it curiosity value, along with the
various types of corals still encrusted along its shaft. The
owner has never desired to scrape clean or change the appearance of this
old anchor, which has high asthetic, aged appeal.
